ServoPro’s safety partner, M Safe Consulting, is a proud Associate Member of the Australasian Institute of Dangerous Goods, also known as the AIDGC.
The AIDGC is an independent industry body proudly supported and sponsored by Safe Work NSW and is the only organisation to offer professional assistance to its members working within the Hazardous Substances and Dangerous Goods Industries.
Krystal Moujaber was invited to attend the AIDGC Annual Workshop and Conference, which took place on the 7th – 8th September 2023.
The AIDGC workshop, “Managing Dangerous Goods Facility Fire and Explosion Risk”, brought together experts, researchers and enthusiasts from diverse industry backgrounds to discuss and explore the latest risks and preventative measures that can be undertaken when working within a Dangerous Goods Facility.
The workshop featured a comprehensive agenda with a lineup of prominent speakers and topics, including…
Dangerous Goods, Process Risk and Building Fire Code Compliance – Dr Amer Magrabi, Director of Fire & Risk Engineering
Regulators Perspective – Fire & Explosion Prevention – Michele Stromquist, State Inspector, Major Hazard Facilities, SafeWork NSW
Importance of Placement – Fire & Gas Detectors – Luke Todisco, Product Manager Connected Solutions
Whilst all of the above were very important, Krystal feels it would be beneficial to discuss the talk from Michele Stromquist, SafeWork NSW.
Over the past few months, there have been incidents occurring at service stations that can almost be completely preventable when adhering to regulations and putting them into practice.
She spoke about fire prevention at Dangerous Goods sites and what we can do to prevent them from happening.
PLAN ???? PROCESS ???? PROTECT
Do you have a workplace layout?
Do you and your staff know how to plan for emergencies?
Have you involved your local fire stations in planning and exercising these procedures?
Do you understand the hazards, and are you managing your risks?
If you have answered yes to all of the above, then you can create a correct response and run practice tests with your staff.
Important to note:
Fire & Rescue NSW are working closely with Safe Work NSW and will attend sites to discuss the business emergency procedures.
The reason for this is the identification of inappropriate dangerous goods storage and design layouts etc. that sites currently have.
Fire & Rescue will now be reviewing plans and providing guidance where needed.
M Safe Consulting is now in the process of creating a ‘change process’ where we try to shift our reactions from a natural immediate response to a practical, calm response in an emergency.
We cannot stress the importance of safety at our service stations enough, and we hope that Safe Work will assist us in ensuring compliance with the regulations and standards prior to fines or prosecution.
