Tesla’s Popularity Signals Change in Australia’s EV Adoption

Australia, a country historically slow to adopt electric vehicles, is showing signs of change as the number of Teslas on the road has noticeably increased in recent months.

The supply-chain issues that caused wait times for new Teslas to stretch up to nine months and inflated the price of second-hand Model 3s to $130,000 last year seem to be over, with a new top-range Model 3 Performance ordered in Sydney today for $90,300 expected to arrive within a week.

This improvement in supply has also affected the second-hand market, where some barely-used Model 3s are now selling for less than the price of a new model. The Albanese government, which came to power last year, has introduced tax exemptions on new EVs and is examining fuel-efficiency standards that could increase the demand for EVs.

As a result, the percentage of EVs in Australia has increased from less than 1% of new car sales a year ago to 6.8% last month, with Teslas now a common sight on the country’s roads. The Model 3 is currently the third-best selling car in the country, behind only the traditional top-selling Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux pickups.
