Award and pay

Which award covers service station staff?

Most console operators and driveway attendants at an Australian service station are covered by the Vehicle Repair, Services and Retail Award 2020 (MA000089), not the General Retail Industry Award.

  • The award covers businesses selling or supplying “running requirements for vehicles”, including motor fuels, gas and oils (clause 4.2). Fair Work award text
  • A café, roadhouse or shop run as an integral part of the service station business is generally covered too. Fair Work guidance
  • A store that’s legally and commercially separate from the fuel business may fall under the General Retail Industry Award (MA000004). If you’re unsure, get advice.
  • Award pay rates change every year from the first full pay period on or after 1 July, after the annual wage review. Always check the current pay guide. Fair Work pay guides

Work health and safety

WHS obligations for service stations.

As the person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU), you have the primary duty to keep workers and visitors safe, so far as is reasonably practicable.

  • Every state and territory except Victoria uses the model WHS laws. Victoria uses the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004. Safe Work Australia
  • You must notify your regulator immediately of a death, serious injury or illness, or dangerous incident, and preserve the site. Incident notification
  • Robbery and working alone are real risks: one staff member was on duty in 80% of the service station robberies studied, and 89% of armed robberies happened between 6pm and 6am. Australian Institute of Criminology
  • Other common servo risks: fuel vapour and hazardous chemicals, manual handling of deliveries and stock, slips on the forecourt, and occupational violence.
  • Find your state’s regulator in the Safe Work Australia directory.
