In Australia, hydrogen vehicles have not yet been widely accessible to the general public, except for some limited fleet trials. However, the petrol firm Ampol is gearing up to introduce this alternative fuel at its stations.
Ampol, a major Australian petrol company, has collaborated with the American company OneH2 to establish hydrogen refuelling stations at its outlets.
Although Ampol has not specified a launch date, it intends to first cater to trucks and fleet vehicles that utilise hydrogen technology.
Previously, Ampol had partnered with Fusion Fuel Green to develop a solar-powered hydrogen production facility in Queensland. But as of August 2022, this project was put on hold, as reported to Argus Media.
OneH2, Ampol’s current partner, boasts nearly ten years of experience in the U.S., specialising in the design, production, and installation of hydrogen refuelling stations.
Globally, car manufacturers like Hyundai, Toyota, and BMW are exploring hydrogen vehicles for large-scale production. These vehicles use hydrogen either as a substitute fuel for traditional engines or as a source for fuel cells that turn hydrogen into electricity, which then powers batteries and electric motors.
The transportation sector might lean towards hydrogen for long-distance heavy trucks due to refuelling times being similar to those of petrol and diesel. This preference arises from the challenges posed by heavy batteries and extended electricity charging durations.
Both Hyundai and Toyota have developed hydrogen refuelling infrastructure to accommodate their hydrogen-fuelled passenger cars, which are currently available in limited quantities to governmental and corporate fleets. Additionally, hydrogen refuelling stations for heavy-duty vehicles and buses have begun operations on Australia’s eastern coast.
