Police have responded to reports of a group setting upon a man with weapons inside a service station

A man was beaten by a group wielding baseball bats and hammers during a terrifying incident at a Townsville service station this evening

The incident was reported to police about 6.20pm when a car carrying a large load of people stopped and confronted a large group of pedestrians on Riverway Dr at Rasmussen.

A witness to the incident told the Townsville Bulletin a man ran into the nearby Mobil service station and was followed by 6-7 people, who proceeded to “beat the crap” out of the man.

All people involved, including the man who was being set upon by the group, had left the scene by the time police had arrived a few minutes later.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said police are investigating.
