Geelong’s Viva Fuel Refinery Lands Lucrative $2.7B Defense Contract

The city of Geelong has received a major economic boost as the Viva fuel refinery secures a highly lucrative defence force contract worth $450 million per year. Viva Energy, one of the country’s two remaining oil refineries, will be responsible for producing and supplying specialised military aviation fuel to the Australian Defense Force for a minimum of six years, with an estimated total value of $2.7 billion.

The Corio facility, which employs around 1000 individuals, will play a crucial role in meeting the fuel needs of ADF aircraft. The contract, praised by Defense Industry Minister Pat Conroy, may even be extended to a duration of 12 years.

Viva Energy CEO Scott Wyatt considers this agreement to be significant not just for Geelong but also for the nation’s energy security. Previously, the defence sector relied on imported fuel, as local production ceased in 2013. By resuming production of military-specification aviation turbine fuel, including the high-flash jet fuel used by navy helicopters, Viva Energy will contribute to Australia’s defence capabilities.

This contract will have a positive impact on Geelong, revitalizing the declining oil refining and fuel production industry, bolstering national defence, ensuring energy security, and creating employment opportunities.

Viva Energy will supply fuel to Defense Fuel Installations across Australia and the RMAF Base Butterworth in Malaysia as part of this new agreement.
