Coordinated Police Effort Halts Stolen Car After Petrol Theft

A 36-year-old man has been detained after he allegedly stole petrol in Tennant Creek, leading police to discover he was driving a car reported stolen from New South Wales.

The incident began at 7:45 am on Monday when authorities were alerted that a car had driven off without paying for fuel at a service station in Tennant Creek. The vehicle, registered in Victoria but stolen from Dareton, NSW, was tracked heading south along the Stuart Highway.

An impressive coordinated effort involving police from Strike Force Viper, the dog squad, the drone unit, and traffic and general duties teams enabled the use of a tyre deflation device to stop the car.

The car was eventually halted south of Alice Springs, where the police arrested the driver.

The man faces charges including unauthorised use of a car, theft, dangerous driving, and running a red light.

Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Budge praised the operation, stating, “I commend the collaborative efforts of all involved to successfully bring this vehicle to a safe stop and apprehend the driver. This incident highlights the outstanding work of our various police units and their unwavering commitment to protect and serve the community.”
