The owners of a petrol station widely known by Gympie region motorists as one of the cheapest place to fuel up have proposed a similar development on the Cooloola Coast.
Sunstate Petroleum, which owns a number of Liberty service stations, including Liberty Monkland, lodged a development application with Gympie Regional Council on March 21, 2022.
Liberty Monkland owner Major Singh was hailed a local hero during the February floods, after he turned the service station into a safe haven for about 300 stranded motorists on the Bruce Highway.
Mr Singh worked 16-hour days to ensure those who were stranded at the petrol station were fed and watered.
Sunstate Petroleum operations manager Josh Bereshezckiy told The Gympie Times on Friday a new Liberty petrol station had been proposed for Cooloola Cove.
The petrol station will be built at the site of the Cooloola Sands development office on Queen Elizabeth Drive, next to the Cooloola Cove Shopping Centre.
Mr Bereshezckiy said the new petrol station would create more jobs for the Cooloola Cove community.
“We employ all local staff … it’s a Gympie business supporting Gympie people for the sole benefit of the community,” he said.
“It’s something that they need, there’s a large population growth in Cooloola Cove.”
Discussions with the Gympie council are ongoing, Mr Bereshezckiy said, and an estimated date on when the service station will be open is yet to be determined.
The DA must first be approved.
