The City of Perth is poised to become the location for Western Australia’s inaugural hydrogen refuelling station, stemming from a collaborative initiative with Frontier Energy, a company aiming to pioneer commercial-scale green hydrogen production in Australia.
Perth Mayor Basil Zempilas shared news of the provisional deal with Frontier Energy at the World Energy Cities Partnership’s (WECP) yearly meeting, which Perth hosted.
Subject to necessary approvals and a definitive investment decision, the proposed refuelling facility will be situated in West Perth. Mayor Zempilas expressed that establishing this station is integral to the city’s sustainability strategy, enhancing the adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles by Perth’s population.
“Introducing a refuelling station within the city is a key component of our commitment to sustainability,” he remarked.
He also acknowledged Frontier Energy as a vital ally in Perth’s quest to achieve a harmonious balance of environmental, social, and economic factors.
Frontier Energy’s managing director, Sam Lee Mohan, conveyed excitement over partnering with the City of Perth to launch the station, which would service hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles.
Frontier is in the process of developing the Bristol Springs Green Hydrogen Project in Western Australia and envisions establishing a network of refuelling stations, dubbed a “hydrogen highway,” across the state. Lee Mohan emphasised that contingent upon a conclusive investment choice, this station is a crucial step towards embracing hydrogen-powered transport options within Western Australia.
“Our ultimate goal is to establish a chain of green hydrogen refuelling stations along WA’s highways, catalysing a significant decrease in the state’s transport and heavy hauling carbon emissions,” he stated.
Perth holds the distinction of being the sole Australian city within the WECP, an organisation dedicated to fostering sustainable energy ties between cities worldwide.
The WECP conference, which occurred from November 1 to 3, gathered 40 delegates representing ten cities.
