As a service station owner, you’ve probably interviewed many people in your time. Because of this, you know that asking the same questions again and again (and getting many of the same answers) gets old.

In this article, we’ve compiled a few unconventional questions that you can ask to get to the root of who your potential employee is as a person and as a worker. These questions will also show your interviewee that your service station culture has a fun side!

Unique Interview Questions

Here are some of our favourite unique interview questions, along with what insight they can give on your interviewee.

If you could be a dessert, what dessert would you be?

This provides interesting insights into how candidates view themselves and gives them a chance to think creatively. It also shows how well they can hold a conversation, which is important for customer service roles.

Why shouldn’t we hire you?

You’ve probably asked the ‘strengths and weaknesses’ question a thousand times. This is a new spin on that. It gives candidates the chance to shine a light on skills they’re lacking, and it also gives you a peek into whether or not they’ll be a good fit.

How would you solve a problem if you were from Mars?

This question gets candidates thinking outside of the box, which is a necessary skill when an unusual situation crops up in the workplace. Their answer will show you if they can adapt to changing environments.

You have been given an elephant that you can’t give away or sell. What do you do with it?

A candidate’s answer shows how good they are at reasoning, along with providing information on their thinking patterns, prioritising, and problem-solving. This question also does a great job of loosening up an interviewee!

If you could choose between being invisible or being able to fly, which would you choose?

This may seem like a childish question, but it can provide useful information on your candidate’s leadership capabilities. Will they use their superpower to help themselves or to help others? If you’re hiring for a leadership position, you’ll want a candidate who uses their powers for the betterment of all.

Asking the Right Questions

Asking unique questions gives you a unique perspective during the interview process. While there are no ‘right’ answers, an interviewee’s responses show how they articulate their thoughts and develop new ideas.
