A 13-year-old boy has been charged following a police pursuit in northern New South Wales on 22 January 2025.
At approximately 1:45 am on Wednesday, 22 January, officers were alerted to a Renault vehicle with NSW registration entering a service station in Lismore. The driver, who appeared to be a young male wearing a face covering, attempted to refuel the vehicle. However, the attendant, suspicious due to the driver’s apparent age and face covering, chose not to activate the fuel pumps.
Unable to refuel, the driver returned to the car and drove off from the service station.
Shortly after, police from the Richmond Police District spotted the Renault on Johnston Street in Casino. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver failed to comply, prompting a pursuit.
The chase spanned approximately 16 kilometres, weaving through the streets of Casino and heading north along the Summerland Way towards Kyogle. The pursuit came to an end near McDonalds Bridge Road in Fairy Hill when the vehicle suddenly pulled over to the side of the road.
Police quickly approached the car and arrested the driver, who was the sole occupant. The teenager was taken into custody and transported to Casino Police Station.
Further investigations revealed the vehicle had been stolen earlier that evening from an address in Byron Bay.
The boy was subsequently charged with several offences, including:
- Driving a vehicle without the owner’s consent
- Failing to stop during a police pursuit
- Possessing suspected stolen goods
The teenager was initially refused bail and appeared before the Children’s Court on the same day. At the hearing, he was granted conditional bail and is scheduled to reappear in court later this month.
