A service station worker has been praised for his quick thinking after a sports car went up in flames on Saturday night at a petrol station in Sydney’s north-west.
The ferocious flames took over the BP service station in McGraths Hill near Windsor just before 7:00pm.
A Chevrolet Corvette parked near the bowsers was completely destroyed and the service station was badly damaged, but authorities said it could have been much worse.
“Some of the footage a local resident took from a nearby hotel just before fire and rescue crews arrived show a rapidly expanding fire involving fuel from the car and also the nearby petrol bowser,” NSW Fire and Rescue Duty Commander Bruce Cameron said.
“But the service station attendant managed to hit the auto-stop button quickly, which prevented the fire from increasing even further.”
No injuries have been reported and Mr Cameron said the driver was “very lucky to escape”.
“The flame was actually rolling out under the service station awning and lapping over onto the roof,” he said.
“There were solar panels on top of the service station roof which firefighters also had to consider and deal with.”
NSW Police are now investigating the cause of the blaze, but it is not believed to be suspicious.
