Snowtown EV Station Wins AEVA’s Top Charging Award

A renewable-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging station, featuring priority access for disabled drivers and specialised pull-through bays for EVs towing trailers or caravans, has been honoured with the top charging award by the Australian Electric Vehicle Association (AEVA).

The RAA Snowtown EV charging station was recognised at AEVA’s annual general meeting in Hobart over the weekend. This station emerged as the winner from a pool of over 80 nominations nationwide, narrowed down to eight finalists earlier in October.

AEVA highlighted the Snowtown station’s high traveller amenities, such as sheltered charging areas, effective lighting, and convenient access to Perry’s Roadhouse with its shop and restroom facilities. Additionally, the site provides a designated priority bay for disabled drivers and pull-through parking for EVs with trailers.

Situated along the Augusta Highway at Perry’s Roadhouse, the Snowtown station offers a range of powerful charging options: three CCS2 200kW chargers, one CHAdeMO 200kW charger, and a backup Type 2 7kW unit.

The runner-up position went to Ampol’s Ampcharge sites at Pheasants Nest in New South Wales, conveniently located along the Hume Highway on the Remembrance Driveway.

“AEVA commends both the RAA and Ampol for setting a high standard in EV charging infrastructure and inspiring others in the industry,” said Dr Chris Jones, AEVA’s national president. “Our award aims to guide both the public and the industry on what EV drivers value most in a top-tier charging facility.”

The award-winning Perry’s Roadhouse station forms part of the RAA Charge network, a state-wide EV charging network powered by 100% renewable energy. The network includes chargers ranging from 7kW to 200kW, with over 530 plugs installed at 142 locations across South Australia.

RAA CEO Nick Reade expressed pride in the recognition for the Snowtown station. “With more than 530 plugs across South Australia, we’re thrilled to see the impact the RAA Charge network is having on enabling EV travel on regional routes,” he stated.

“Our sites are carefully placed along major travel routes and tourist destinations, thoughtfully designed to prioritise customer needs with access to local services, ample lighting, and robust safety measures. Perry’s Roadhouse is the ideal site for travellers heading to and from South Australia’s mid-north, offering excellent facilities and convenience.”
