An individual wielding a knife instigated a brief standoff at a service station in Tasmania last night, threatening to ignite the building.
Employees and patrons evacuated as the individual ascended to the rooftop of the Launceston Ampol service station on Westbury Road, around 11:30 pm on Wednesday.
For approximately 50 minutes, the vicinity of the service station was sealed off, resulting in the closure of multiple roads. A substantial number of armed officers rapidly converged on the location.
Upon arrival, police encountered the 27-year-old man from Glenorchy in an agitated state on the rooftop, issuing threats. He was apprehended following a brief engagement.
Today, the individual is slated to be presented in the Launceston Magistrates Court, facing charges including arson, violating bail conditions, illegal possession of a hazardous object in a public area, and recklessly launching a projectile endangering others.
