Exhausted firefighters have spent months battling deadly blazes to save homes and wildlife.
And now, in perhaps the most Aussie gesture possible, a petrol company is offering free pies to heroic emergency service workers.
United Petroleum said emergency workers and volunteers will be treated to a free pie and a bottle of water when they visit its service stations across Victoria and New South Wales.
Brave volunteers will receive a Pie Face pie, including its iconic chunky steak or chicken and mushroom.
The company said it was making the gesture to say ‘thank you’ for the emergency teams’ ‘immense sacrifice’.
‘We are deeply saddened by the sheer loss this country is feeling right now,’ the company said.
‘To those fighting for people they will never meet, in conditions we can’t even imagine, thank you. Your sacrifice is immense, and your actions the embodiment of all that is great about our country.
‘To our emergency services personnel, we can’t thank you enough.
Volunteers and workers will get a free pie and a 600ml bottle of water at two sites in Victoria, Bairnsdale and Sale.
This is in addition to the NSW sites of Kambah, Junee, Kempsey, North Richmond, Nowra, Wagga Wagga, Wilberforce, Wodonga and West Wodonga.
A bottle of water, but no pie, can be redeemed at a further three sites in Victoria, Bairnsdale Main Street, Lakes Entrance and Sale South.
In NSW, a free bottle of water can be found at Cobargo, Dorrigo, Lismore, Marangaroo, Ourimbah, Pambula and Tomerong.
United Petroleum has also donated $1,000,000 to the National Bushfire Disaster Appeal.
It is one of many kind-hearted gestures being made to support firefighters across Australia.
In a touching act which drew praise from around the world, the local owners of an Indian restaurant have provided thousands of free meals to those caught up in the bushfires in Gippsland, Victoria.
Kanwaljit Singh and his wife Kamaljit Kaur own the Desi Grill in Bairnsdale in eastern Victoria where fires have destroyed homes and resulted in one death.
Along with their staff, they have been cooking curry and rice which is being handed out by Melbourne charity Sikh Volunteers Australia to those living in temporary shelter.
Mr Singh, who has lived in the area for six years, said he felt he had a ‘duty’ to help his fellow Australians.
‘It’s terrible out there. People are severely affected and they need food and shelter. It’s our duty to serve them when they need us the most,’ he told SBS Punjabi.
