To boost the adoption of electric vehicles in Queensland, the government has increased the incentives for drivers. Under the new scheme, eligible households can now receive a rebate of $6,000 for purchasing certain electric vehicles. This is a doubling of the previous rebate of $3,000 that was launched in July 2022.
The scheme applies to 12 vehicles currently, with seven more expected to be added later this year. The Queensland Energy Minister, Mick De Brenni, expects up to 10,000 additional households will be eligible for the rebate. The initiative aims to counteract fluctuating prices of electric vehicles, which have risen due to material costs and inflation.
To qualify for the rebate, households need to earn up to $180,000 in total gross income per year, and the vehicles must cost up to $68,000 (excluding dealer delivery fees). The previous limit was $58,000. The scheme is not restricted to those with high incomes, and it aims to give everyone, including working parents, the opportunity to purchase an electric vehicle.
RACQ general manager of advocacy Joshua Cooney has welcomed the announcement, stating that new electric car sales across the state had increased by nearly 80% in the first three months of this year. However, he emphasized that supportive infrastructure, such as charging stations, needed to be prioritized to keep up with the growing number of electric vehicles.
