Mackay police are investigating an attempted ATM heist at Walkerston.
Initial investigations indicate the incident occurred about 2am Wednesday after a white van pulled up to the BP service station on Dutton St.
Mackay Criminal Investigation Branch Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Eaton said the suspect then “smashes the glass door of the premises to gain entry”.
Senior Sergeant Eaton said the suspect put “a strap around the ATM” and attempted to pull it, but was unsuccessful.
The offender has then stolen a quantity of cigarette lighters from the service station.

This morning, Walkerston Fuel let potential customers know the business was closed “for a little while” and apologised for the inconvenience.
The service station reopened just after 10.30am.
Police are calling for information about the offence or stolen items, or dashcam footage from the area around the time overnight.
Anyone who can help is urged to come forward.
