Police hunt witnesses to alleged petrol assault in Perth’s south

Police are calling for witnesses to bolster the case against a man who is accused of pouring petrol on a woman and setting it alight in Perth’s south earlier this month.

The 38-year-old Maddington man faced court on September 16 on two charges over the incident, which stemmed from a car break-down in Oakford two days earlier. He is due to reappear on October 1.

Police claim the pair were in a red or maroon 2003 Mazda Tribute when it ran out of petrol on Nicholson Road between Thomas and Armadale roads about 8am on the morning of September 14.

The woman started walking to a service station before a blue Holden Commodore ute with matching tonneau cover stopped to give her a lift to a service station in Harrisdale, returning her to the Mazda about 10am.

It is alleged the 38-year-old man remained at the Mazda and became upset with the woman when she returned; when she ran towards Thomas Road, he allegedly grabbed her, doused per in petrol and set her alight.

The woman managed to put out the fire, but received singed hair and burns to her neck and ear.

Police have since charged the 38-year-old with unlawful act or omission with intent to harm and common assault in circumstances of aggravation, but are still attempting to track down the driver of the blue ute who gave the woman a lift.

Armadale Detectives would also like to hear from anyone who had dashcam footage of the area between 8am and 10.15am on September 14.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report online at www.crimestopperswa.com.au.
