For over a week, residents in Sydney’s south-west have been struggling with a strong petrol odour infiltrating their homes, leaving many concerned for their health.
In Prestons, near Liverpool, the smell—originating from the sewer system—has made daily activities unbearable. Locals have reported symptoms such as headaches and nausea, with some resorting to sealing their homes with duct tape to keep the fumes out.
Health and Environmental Concerns Grow
The issue extends beyond residential areas, with fears of contamination spreading to nearby water systems and public spaces. Member for Leppington, Nathan Hagarty, stressed the urgency of the situation, highlighting reports of a thin layer of residue appearing on backyard pools. He emphasised the need for not only immediate action but also long-term remediation and compensation for affected families.
Fuel Station Identified as the Source
Following an investigation, Sydney Water traced the contamination to a petrol station on Camden Valley Way. The business was shut down, and Sydney Water confirmed that its connection to the sewer main had been blocked to prevent further leakage.
Ampol, the company operating the station, stated that integrity testing of underground tanks and fuel lines is underway, with results expected next week.
Meanwhile, authorities have begun flushing the sewer system in an effort to remove lingering fumes and restore safety to the area.
