In 2023, Perth experienced its highest fuel prices ever, with independent retailers offering the most affordable petrol. Costco’s airport and Casuarina locations topped the list with the lowest average prices, but their service requires a $65 membership. The most affordable option for non-members was Vibe Kwinana, followed closely by Atlas Fuel Kwinana and Atlas Fuel Ascot.
Atlas Fuel was prominent in the top rankings, occupying five of the top 11 spots, all under an average of 171.5¢. Vibe, Costco, Liberty, and FastFuel 24/7 are also featured in these rankings. Perth’s average petrol price for the year was a record-breaking 183.9¢, surpassing the previous year’s average due to the global oil price surge triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Morrison government’s temporary excise cut provided some relief in 2022, but prices remained high in 2023. Despite this, Perth was the cheapest Australian capital city for fuel. Commerce Minister Sue Ellery emphasised the role of independent retailers in offering lower prices and encouraged motorists to use the FuelWatch website to save significant amounts on fuel.
Major petrol chains in Perth, such as Coles, Shell, BP, Ampol, Caltex, United, and Puma, didn’t make it to the top of
FuelWatch’s rankings. In 2023, Perth saw a return to a weekly price cycle, with Tuesdays usually offering the lowest prices, followed by a sharp increase on Wednesdays. This pattern emerged after the COVID pandemic’s fortnightly pricing.
Ellery pointed out that while major petrol retailers often align their pricing cycles, the key takeaway is that shopping around can lead to substantial savings on fuel. This strategy, according to FuelWatch’s data, can significantly impact household budgets.
