ServoPro has recently teamed up with M Safe Consulting, founded by Krystal Moujaber – and in order to help our members get to know her a little better, we interviewed her to find out who she is and what makes her tick.
First off, tell us a bit more about yourself. Where are you based, what are your hobbies, and what do you do to relax and have fun?
My name is Krystal Moujaber, I’m 27 years old, and I’m based in Sydney. I have two older brothers – so as the youngest and the only girl, you can imagine how spoilt I am. I have an adorable and extremely cheeky French bulldog – this dog has taken over my life, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.
Food is a major hobby of mine, and I definitely consider myself a foodie. I’m also very adventurous – I love trying new cuisines. On the weekends, my partner and I like to tick off different restaurants from our bucket list.
As for relaxing, just seeing a sunflower will put me in a happy mood. I can’t walk by one without smiling. Sunset is my favorite time of day, especially when it’s spent on my favorite place: The beach! The beach is my go-to place in the summer and the winter, and it’s where I come up with all my best ideas.
And when I really want to relax, I get comfortable with a Jay Shetty podcast. When I’m overwhelmed or stressed, those episodes really do the trick.
On a deeper level, I’m very down to earth. You’ll never see me without a smile on my face. I firmly believe that, in life, everything happens for a reason and there is nothing to be upset about. If something goes wrong, it can be fixed, and nothing is impossible. I had to go through some pretty personal life-changing experiences to find this mindset, but I am now a firm believer in self-care to remedy a bad day. I allow myself to feel what I’m feeling for that day only, and the next morning, I wake up with a fresh state of mind.
And above all, spending time with family is the most important part of life for me. No matter what, they can always bring me back to myself and help me appreciate the small things.
Why did you decide to start M Safe Consulting?
From the very beginning, I’ve been a believer in going after what you truly want. The phrase I live by is: If you can dream it, why can’t you do it? I dreamed of starting this business because I have a passion for safety, and not many people can say that in this industry. So, I made it happen.
Before starting at Westside Petroleum, I started in an entirely different background. I was a childcare educator for children with autism, so coming to this field was a big jump. But when I was faced with challenges, I found myself dealing with them in the same way that I would help the children through their challenges. And my passion for safety was encouraged when I got to know the operators, and when the team was faced with some pretty hefty safety notices.
After that, I wanted more and more from this industry. So, I worked with an independent safety consultant who helped me create my very first EPP (which is now known as a Fuel System Operating Plan) and from then on, I knew this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
Back in 2019, I started working towards my Masters in Business. It was up and down for a few years, but in 2021, I knuckled down for 6 months and was able to finish the degree while working part time. And after I finished, I said to myself “That’s it, you’re opening your own business and you’re going to smash it.” (My exact words!) I was of the mindset that I shouldn’t just help one major company ensure their sites are compliant, I should be able to help everyone. So, here we are!
What’s your favourite part of working with independent petrol station owners, and the petrol and convenience industry in general?
In many cases, the independents don’t get the credit that they deserve. It takes hard work, dedication, and a lot of sacrifices in order to operate an independent petrol station. As I said, the most important thing in my life is family, and many of these independents are family-run businesses. They’ve worked hard to get to where they are. My favourite part is getting to know them on a personal level and building a strong and solid working relationship. I truly enjoy learning what they want from their businesses.
Another one of my favourite aspects is the challenge. I’m always up for a challenge! There are new things to learn every single day, and I love that.
I also appreciate the fact that I’m educating myself every day. Whether it’s from reading, or learning from the experiences of people who have been in the industry for years and years. I love learning and I know that, one day, I’ll be able to teach others in the same way that I’ve been taught.
You have worked with some very well known independent groups, including Westside Petroleum. What were some of the main aspects of safety and compliance that you looked after with them?
With so many new rules popping up, different state councils, and differing regulations across Australia, it’s difficult to know when you’re doing the right thing as an operator. Because of this, the main aspects of safety and compliance that I looked after were the council safety and improvement notices. Operators get spooked when a letter or notice is sent to them, and they think they’re committing a crime. And it’s okay to be worried – after all, this is their business. It’s their baby.
I would speak to the council, SafeWork, EPA, and other personnel to take that stress away from operators. Then, we would work together to ensure that their sites were fully compliant. I was responsible for ensuring that every site had all of its mandatory documentation as per the Australian Standards and EPA Regulations, which included their FSOP, Notification of Hazardous chemicals, HAZMAT manifest plans, asite manifest, and safety management plans.
What areas of safety and compliance are you looking forward to helping ServoPro members with?
I’d like to ensure the safety and wellbeing of ServoPro members, as well as their customers and staff. To do so, we’ll need to make sure they’re up to date with their safety training and have updated all of their documentation.
In short, I’m looking forward to helping members with all things safety related!
