Pacific Energy Acquires Australia’s First Hydrogen Refueling Station

Pacific Energy, Australia’s leading provider of green hydrogen production and refuelling facilities, has just moved significantly. They’ve acquired the Canberra Hydrogen Refueling Facility from ActewAGL. Located in Fyshwick, in the southern part of Australia’s capital city, Canberra, this facility was the first publicly accessible hydrogen refuelling station in the country when it opened its doors in 2021.

In a recent media release, Pacific Energy stated that this acquisition marks its first venture into hydrogen infrastructure investment, adding to its impressive portfolio of energy assets. The company, known for pioneering hydrogen solutions, sees this investment as a step towards its vision of creating a robust and innovative mobility ecosystem with reliable and safe hydrogen refuelling stations.

The facility, originally designed and built by Pacific Energy’s subsidiary ENGV, is a testament to the company’s internal capabilities and commitment to innovation. It also highlights the expertise of its equipment partners: NEL for electrolysers and PDC Machines and IVYS Energy Solutions for hydrogen refueling stations.

Since its establishment, the station has played a crucial role in Canberra’s journey towards hydrogen mobility, catering to a growing fleet of hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). Notably, the ACT Government, which operates the largest FCEV fleet, will continue to utilise the station through an extended fleet lease facilitated by Hyundai. Other notable users of the facility include ActewAGL, Woodside Energy, and the Korean Embassy.

The presence of FCEVs from Hyundai and Toyota, such as the NEXO and the Mirai, underscores the importance of the station in promoting zero-emission transport.

Pacific Energy is committed to supporting the growth of the ACT green hydrogen ecosystem by ensuring the station remains accessible for car refuelling. Jamie Cullen, Pacific Energy’s CEO, expressed his excitement about the acquisition and emphasised its alignment with the company’s mission to lead in infrastructure provision across various fuel technologies.

He said, “With our established reputation and track record of delivering broad-based hydrogen solutions, the acquisition of the Canberra Hydrogen Refueling Facility perfectly aligns with our goal to be a leading provider of the infrastructure the sector needs to grow.”

The ACT Government aims for 80-90 per cent zero-emission vehicle sales by 2030, and Pacific Energy views investments in hydrogen refuelling infrastructure as crucial in supporting this objective. Collaborative efforts with Hyundai, Toyota, and Ampol are underway to build more FCEV stations, and the ACT Government endorses these initiatives as part of its commitment to a clean energy future.

Fiona Wright from the ACT Government emphasised hydrogen’s role in decarbonising the transport sector and expressed anticipation of continuing to collaborate with Pacific Energy.

“Decarbonising the ACT transport sector is a key focus of our commitment to reach net zero by 2045. Hydrogen will continue to play a role in this, with the Canberra Hydrogen Refueling Station providing the essential infrastructure to meet future demand for this fuel type,” Wright concluded.
