Man jailed for five years for attack on pregnant woman at Melbourne service station

A man who admitted to the sickening assault of a pregnant woman at a Melbourne service station has been sentenced to five years in jail.

Didier Lam Kee Shau, 38, was drunk when he attacked the woman in a car on the way home from an event on September 17 last year, before she pulled over into the Mount Waverley service station to seek refuge.

There, he punched her and stomped on her head before ramming the service station’s doors to try and run her down as she hid inside.

The Honda smashed through the window, almost hitting the shop attendant inside and causing about $90,000 worth of damage.

Shau, who pleaded guilty to recklessly causing injury and conduct endangering life, was sentenced to five years’ prison in the County Court of Victoria on Thursday but can apply for parole after he has served three and a half years, Seven News reported.

“It’s all but miraculous that she was not far more seriously injured,” Judge Richard Smith said.

The woman, who suffered multiple cuts and bruises, has since given birth to the child she was five months’ pregnant with at the time.

Shau was also disqualified from driving and fined for failing to give police a breath sample.
