Iconic Matilda the Kangaroo Delights Travellers at Caltex Traveston

Every year, thousands of travellers make their way to the Caltex Traveston service centre, drawn by the chance to connect with an extraordinary piece of Australian sporting history.

Meet Matilda the kangaroo, the star attraction of the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games, remembered for her head-turning, winking charm and the spectacle of joeys leaping from her pouch.

Lorne Chambers, General Manager of Chevron Australia Downstream (Caltex), expressed Caltex’s pride in preserving this national icon.

“We’re thrilled to share Matilda with everyone. Standing at an impressive thirteen metres and weighing six tonnes, she’s truly a one-of-a-kind sight along the Bruce Highway,” said Lorne.

Visitors heading north past the Sunshine Coast often pause to enjoy the top-notch facilities at Traveston and capture a memorable photo with Matilda.

The Traveston service centre highlights the best of Caltex, from freshly brewed barista coffee to quality food, with Caltex Rewards honouring loyal customers. It offers Caltex with Techron fuel in all grades, 24 fuelling hoses, and comprehensive amenities including truck-stop facilities with ensuites and laundry, over 100 parking spots, outdoor rest areas with BBQ facilities, kids’ play areas, parent rooms, showers, and more. Additionally, the site operates on solar power and has its own wastewater treatment system, underscoring its commitment to sustainability.

Matilda’s 50th birthday will coincide with the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, offering another occasion to celebrate her iconic legacy.

Caltex, a brand of Chevron, is part of one of the world’s most prominent integrated energy companies, with over 70 years of history in Australia.
