Electricity prices may be going up, but Australia has a new cheapest electric vehicle.
The Hyundai Ioniq – priced at $44,990 before on-road costs – has beaten out the previous title holder, Renault, by $2,500, with Hyundai releasing three models for motorists to choose from.
They include a hybrid, plug-in hybrid and a full-on electric car, which are expected to be available for purchase in early 2019.
The hybrid is expected to cost $33,990 before on-road costs, while the plug-in hybrid will set you back around $40,990 before on-road costs.
“Based on the interest that we’ve received so far, we’re expecting the majority of the buyers to be electric, somewhere around 50 per cent, and we’re going to take a guess at around 30 per cent being plug-ins,” said Andrew Tuitahi, Hyundai Australia’s Product Planning Manager.
The Ioniq Electric has a claimed range of 230km in a single charge, with charging available at select locations around Australia, with drivers additionally able to purchase a home charger.
Select Ioniq models will additionally come with 16inch alloys, LED lights, an 8inch infotainment unit and glass sunroof, meaning there’s plenty of style behind the substance.
First revealed at the Geneva Motor Show back in February 2016, the Ioniq range is set to complement the arrival of the Kona SUV electric range, with Hyundai additionally planning to release almost 40 sustainable models worldwide by 2025.
