In observance of Earth Day today (April 22nd), Google has introduced new features and expanded existing ones in Search and Maps to assist Australians in adopting more sustainable travel practices.
Among these enhancements is the option to select the most fuel-efficient route while navigating through Maps. Leveraging Google’s AI capabilities, users can now compare the energy savings and time variances between different routes. While there’s no compulsion to choose the most fuel-efficient option, Google furnishes the necessary information for users to make an informed decision according to their preferences.
To tailor the route optimisation effectively, users input their vehicle’s engine type, recognising that fuel or energy efficiency may vary based on the engine type and route. Although users can adjust their route preference at any time, Maps defaults to the user’s predetermined settings initially.
Moreover, Maps will now suggest public transport or walking alternatives alongside driving routes if the travel times are comparable and feasible. This feature will be gradually introduced to over 15 cities worldwide, including Sydney and Melbourne.
In addition to route planning, Google Search now provides comprehensive information on train schedules, ticket prices, and booking options. Similarly, when searching for flights, users will receive details about train trips to the same destination, facilitating greener travel choices.
Andrew Foster, Director of Google Maps in Sydney, affirms, “These new tools will surface information in Maps and Search in an accessible and visual way, helping Australians consider sustainable transport more quickly and easily – at a glance.”
Furthermore, Google is rolling out new functionalities in Maps and Search to locate EV chargers, aiding users in planning charging stops for road trips.
Google Flights has also incorporated estimated emissions for nearly every flight in its search results. Users can filter results to identify lower-emission options if desired.
With environmental concerns looming large, even small efforts matter. As more companies embrace sustainability initiatives, Google aims to empower users with tools to contribute to a greener world. Expect more features from Google in the coming months to support environmentally conscious decisions.
