Fuel Tanker Leak Sparks Major Hazmat Incident

A fuel tanker leak has triggered a significant hazardous materials (Hazmat) incident at Sandy Hollow in the Upper Hunter.

Early Monday morning, just after 3:30 am, emergency teams responded to the Golden Highway where a diesel tanker, holding 12,500 litres, had ruptured and was spilling fuel rapidly—at a rate of 200 litres per minute. Roughly 5,000 litres of diesel made its way into the stormwater system.

Swift action by emergency crews allowed them to relocate the tanker to a nearby service station. By 5:00 am, they successfully transferred the remaining fuel to a large storage tank on-site.

While the highway was temporarily closed, it has since been reopened to traffic. The Environment Protection Authority has been notified and is handling the environmental impact of the spill.
