A Melbourne motorist has escaped serious injury after their vehicle was crushed between a large fuel tanker and the tunnel wall in a dramatic incident inside the Burnley Tunnel on Monday night.
A Close Call Underground
CCTV footage captured the frightening moment when the tanker, while changing lanes, collided with a Mitsubishi Pajero travelling beside it. The SUV was pinned against the tunnel wall, sending sparks and debris across the road as both vehicles came to an abrupt stop.
Emergency crews arrived within minutes and managed to separate the vehicles using heavy equipment. Incredibly, no one was hurt, despite the severe damage to both vehicles.
Quick Response and Safety Reminder
Tunnel operator Transurban reported that its monitoring systems detected the crash immediately, and incident response teams were on the scene within four minutes. The company reminded drivers that while tunnel collisions are uncommon, they can be extremely dangerous because of the confined space and limited escape options.
Motorists are encouraged to stay in their lane whenever possible and to avoid sudden movements in tunnels or high-speed zones. Even a minor error in these environments can quickly turn into a major accident.
Outcome
Police investigated the incident and issued the truck driver a penalty for making an unsafe lane change. Traffic through the tunnel was delayed for some time while the vehicles were cleared and the roadway made safe again.
The incident serves as a reminder of how quickly things can go wrong on the road and how lucky everyone was that this terrifying crash ended without injury.
