Fuel spill in Barooga

Firefighters today prevented fuel from seeping in to the Barooga Creek.

About 200 litres of unleaded fuel spilled in to stormwater drains due to a malfunction with a fuel bowser earlier this morning.

The Tocumwal and Deniliquin Fire + Rescue NSW brigades were called to Barooga about 5.20am to assist the Rural Fire Service, using specialist hazmat equipment to monitor the situation and clean up the fuel.

The drains were opened and decanted into containers while the atmospheric conditions and fuel vapours were constantly monitored.

Absorbent booms were set up in three different locations to prevent fuel from seeping in to the nearby Barooga Creek.

Firefighters liaised with the Environmental Protection Agency to ensure operations minimised environmental contamination.
