Fiery Service Station Cairns Crash: Driver Five Times Legal Alcohol Limit

A vehicle crashed into a Cairns service station in April and caught fire, with the driver allegedly having a blood alcohol level five times over the legal limit. A 31-year-old man from Cooktown has been charged after registering a blood alcohol reading of .258.

According to police, on April 21, the man failed to make a right-hand turn from Reservoir Road onto Pease Street. The Mercedes Benz Sprinter van veered off the road and collided with the Shell Coles Express service station.

A CCTV photo shows the crashed Mercedes-Benz Sprinter at the service station. Queensland Police released the image.

The impact of the collision ignited the fuel at the pump, resulting in a fire that completely destroyed the van and caused damage to the petrol pumps.

Following an investigation conducted by officers from the Cairns West Cairns police station, the driver was issued a notice to appear in court for charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and driving without exercising due care and attention.
