eLumina has launched Australia’s first factory capable of producing both community lithium batteries and electric vehicle (EV) chargers, with production set to begin in 2025. This $20 million Manufacturing and Development Centre, located on the Gold Coast, marks a significant step in Australia’s energy storage sector, fueling the global demand for batteries and setting a new benchmark for local innovation.
The factory is designed to produce 300 batteries and EV chargers annually and is expected to create up to 300 jobs in the Gold Coast area.
“We’re extremely proud to officially open our facility in Yatala. This factory not only creates 300 specialised, high-demand jobs but also establishes valuable training pathways in partnership with TAFE Queensland,” stated eLumina’s CEO, Lisa Marsh.
These new jobs aren’t just vital to the local economy—they’re pivotal to Australia’s future in technology and renewable energy. Damian Kassabgi, CEO of the Tech Council of Australia, highlighted the Gold Coast’s emerging status as a hub for tech and manufacturing: “Our goal is to have 1.2 million tech workers in Australia by 2030, and partnerships with pioneering companies like eLumina are making this a reality in the renewable energy sector.”
John Grimes, CEO of the Smart Energy Council, emphasised the critical role of eLumina’s work: “Partnering with eLumina aligns with our mission to ensure a sustainable energy future. Their leadership in becoming Australia’s first manufacturer of community lithium batteries and EV chargers demonstrates groundbreaking innovation.”
One of the main challenges eLumina aims to address is the connectivity gap across Australia, particularly in rural and regional areas. Through a partnership with Addelec, eLumina is deploying battery-integrated EV chargers with a focus on regional access, ensuring these solutions can reach every part of the country.
“In places like Europe, high EV adoption is supported by dense infrastructure. Australia’s size requires a unique approach,” explained Chris McPherson, Addelec’s General Manager. “By tackling Australia’s specific energy challenges, we aim to drive broader EV uptake across the country.”
Looking to the future, eLumina envisions even larger facilities. CEO Lisa Marsh shared, “Our goal is for the next factory to be three times as large, further diversifying Australia’s manufacturing sector, building economic resilience, and fortifying a ‘Gold Coast Made’ economy.”
Marsh added, “We’re proud to contribute to Australia’s energy future. By advancing battery storage, we’re helping to secure Australia’s energy independence and support the national transition to net-zero.”
Through its efforts, eLumina is not only reshaping the Gold Coast’s economy but also strengthening Australia’s position as a global leader in renewable energy technology.
