Coles, a leading supermarket chain, is taking a step towards environmental sustainability by launching its first electric delivery van, affectionately named “Sparky.” The vehicle will be utilized in Flagstone, south of Brisbane, and is expected to handle as many as 240 orders each week.
Sparky will not only contribute to a reduction in fuel costs by about $170 per week but will also emit fewer pollutants and create less noise compared to traditional petrol-powered vans. Additionally, the van has the advantage of not having to “idle” or keep the engine running when stationary to maintain the temperature of the groceries.
Beyond this initiative, Coles is also planning to install electric fridges in 500 delivery vans, following successful trials earlier in the year. These revamped vans will be operated across Australia’s east coast, promising both a decrease in emissions and reduced operating expenses.
James Geddes, Coles’ general manager of online network growth, emphasized that the introduction of Sparky supports the company’s goal to cut scope 1 and 2 emissions by over 75% by the year 2030. The electric vehicle (EV) will be making around 40 deliveries daily, offering a quieter and more efficient alternative to conventional vans, producing fewer emissions.
Furthermore, Coles is also collaborating with Linfox, Toll Group, and Nexport in its sustainability efforts, including the testing of an electric-powered truck and an electric yard tractor within its supply chain.
