LIBERTY service station at the Bailey centre will donate fifteen cents from every litre of fuel sold on Thursday 29 October to help the local Parkinson’s disease support group.
Parkinson’s is a movement and mood disorder that presents with symptoms such as slowness of movement, muscle rigidity, instability, tremor, depression and anxiety which affects up to 212,000 people in Australia.
There is no cure for the condition currently, but medication and physical therapy can have positive effects in controlling the symptoms of the disease.
Coffs Harbour Parkinson’s Support group has around one hundred and fifty members, with 40 being in the younger age group.
People with the disease are more susceptible to the debilitating effects of COVID-19, and as a result the group has not been able to run its annual fundraiser.
Proceeds from the Pump it for Parkinson’s event will contribute to funding support nurse roles in the Coffs Harbour area.
Support group co-ordinator Graham Saxby said that they would like to engage another nurse to help the one full time person that currently serves the area.
“The support nurse provides more than just medical support, assisting in organising medical reviews, transport and NDIS applications as well as so many other things.
“The nurse kept me working and active and gave me direction since my diagnosis and allowed me to refocus and become an advocate for people with Parkinson’s.”
Pump it for Parkinson’s will run for 24 hours at the Bailey Centre Liberty service station on Thursday 29 October.
