Charges laid over Pacific Motorway fuel tanker crash

A Gold Coast man has been charged after a multi-vehicle Pacific Motorway crash left the highway closed for hours on Saturday after a fuel tanker rolled and spilled part of its load.

Police will allege the 27-year-old from Upper Coomera was travelling south at Helensvale when his Holden ute clipped the tanker’s trailer about 11.50am, causing it to roll into another car.

Fuel from the tanker then spilt into the southbound lanes, leading police to declare an emergency situation while crews worked on the scene.

The major road had reopened in both directions by Sunday morning. Nobody was seriously injured in the crash.

Investigations led police to charge the man with one count of driving without due care and attention.

He is due to appear at the Southport Magistrates Court on February 19.
