Petrol giant BP has its sights set on a $6.8 million construction project it says will create 40 ongoing jobs in a beachside Cairns suburb.
The company has lodged a development application to Cairns Regional Council for a “travel centre” on the Captain Cook Hwy at Yorkeys Knob.
The development is a fuel station with an attached drive-through fast food restaurant – the identity of which remains a mystery – which BP argues will fill an emerging void.
“This travel centre will fill a need on the Captain Cook Hwy where the Smithfield bypass will effectively create a scenario where there will be no service station directly accessible from the Captain Cook Hwy between Aeroglen and Clifton Beach, some 15km,” the documents state.
“It is recognised in planning principles it is beneficial for a large city to have travel centres at the entry and exits of Cairns, complementing the United at Gordonvale.”
If approved, it will be the only service station of its nature with B-double parking and truck drive rest amenities operating 24 hours-a-day in Cairns.
