A significant hydrogen fuel station is set to be constructed in Brisbane, marking a key development in Australia’s green energy landscape. This initiative is the result of a collaboration between Lion Energy, Mitsubishi, and Samsung, with the project centred on the creation of green hydrogen production and distribution facilities at the Port of Brisbane. The station is projected to produce over 300 tonnes of hydrogen annually, which will be used to power heavy vehicles and support Brisbane’s bus network.
Lion Energy has secured a $3.7 million financial agreement with Mitsubishi and Samsung to bring this project to life. With government approvals already in place, the company has also signed a 10-year lease, with an option to extend for another ten years, with Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd.
Looking ahead, Lion Energy plans to expand this initiative by establishing similar hydrogen stations in Sydney and Melbourne. Tom Soulsby, Executive Chairman of Lion Energy, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership with Mitsubishi and Samsung, highlighting their extensive expertise. He emphasised that their involvement underscores confidence in both the vast potential of green hydrogen in Australia and Lion Energy’s capability to lead such projects.
Soulsby also noted the growing interest in hydrogen offtake as the project progresses. He explained that the initial markets for their green hydrogen would likely include the replacement of grey hydrogen with green hydrogen for industrial clients, fuel cell generators (which offer a more efficient alternative to traditional diesel generators at construction, mining, and event sites), and heavy-duty vehicle operators such as bus companies and truck fleet managers.
The company expects to provide updates on offtake agreements by the third quarter of 2024, signalling ongoing momentum in the transition to greener energy solutions.
