Ashmont: Thieves steal car, cash and cigarettes before torching vehicle in ram raid incident

Thieves have smashed their way into an Ashmont business taking thousands of dollars in cash and cigarettes.

A group of thieves are on the run tonight after stealing a vehicle and using it to ram their way into an Ashmont Service station.

In the early hours of Monday morning, the group of people stole a grey Holden Commodore from a home in Downside, a rural area north west of Wagga.

At about 4.45am, they drove the car to Wagga and used the vehicle to bash their way into the Metro Petroleum service station located on Tobruk St in Ashmont.

After fleeing the scene the thieves set fire to the stolen vehicle.

The car was found alight and completely destroyed at about 5.30am on McNickle Road, Wagga.

Wagga Police Inspector John Aichinger said at around 1pm today that police at the time did not have any suspects.

“Investigations are continuing, crime scenes have attended and have processed both scenes,” he said.

As police continue to investigate the incident police are urging witnesses or anyone with dashcam vision in the area at the time to come forward.
