A new service station is gearing up to open in Cairns this week, promising some fresh competition in the tight Far North petrol market.
Liberty Oil will open its first servo in Cairns on the weekend, located at 550 Bruce Highway Woree.
Liberty Oil director David Goldberger said it was planned to be the first of six service stations for the Far North region, as part of a big expansion push for the company across Queensland.
“What we’re going to do is cover most of the city, along the highway coming into Cairns, and between it and Port Douglas,” he said.
Mr Goldberger said he was aware fuel prices were a hot-button topic in the Far North, saying the centre would be competitive with the other servos in the region.
“We generally aim for prices below the market, and we price aggressively even on the highways,” he said.
“I can’t say what the prices will be yet, but being an independent store, we’re going to do what we can to be competitive.”
