A man arrested after a police chase is suspected of being responsible for numerous petrol drive-offs in the northern suburbs over the past six weeks.
A police patrol spotted a red Subaru displaying front and rear number plates that did not match about 5.20am this morning.
The patrol tried to pull over the vehicle but the male driver refused to stop and a short police chase ensued until the car turned into Elaine Ave – a dead-end street – near the Bridgeway Hotel.
The driver – a 27-year-old Brompton man – ran off but was quickly arrested for driving to evade police, driving while unlicensed and displaying unassigned number plates.
Further inquiries also revealed the Subaru had been involved in five petrol thefts over the past six weeks from service stations at Parafield, Greenacres, Para Hills West, Stepney and Kent Town.
Police are continuing their investigations into the matter.
