Police Seize $1.5 Million in Illicit Tobacco Bust

A major police operation in the Murraylands has led to the seizure of black-market tobacco valued at $1.5 million.

Last Tuesday, officers from South Australia Police’s heavy vehicle squad stopped a truck travelling through Monteith. Upon inspection, they allegedly uncovered six pallets of illicit tobacco products being smuggled into the state from the eastern regions.

The vehicle was immediately confiscated and transported to a secure police compound in Ottoway for further investigation.

This operation forms part of Operation Eclipse, an ongoing initiative designed to dismantle the illegal tobacco trade across South Australia. Just weeks ago, police carried out compliance checks on tobacco retailers in the Murraylands, ensuring businesses adhered to licensing regulations. Similar highway interceptions were made in late 2024, highlighting the persistent nature of black-market activity.

Detective Chief Inspector Tim Rasch, who leads SAPOL’s serious crime task force, confirmed that organised crime groups remain the driving force behind illicit tobacco distribution.

“These latest seizures demonstrate that criminal syndicates continue to operate within South Australia,” he stated.

“SA Police will persist in identifying those responsible and ensuring they face legal consequences where evidence supports prosecution.”

Authorities urge anyone with information on illegal tobacco operations to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a report anonymously via www.crimestopperssa.com.au.
