The Junction Service Station has been a vital part of the Inverell community for nearly seventy years, serving as a landmark for the countless miles travelled by local families, tradespeople, and those passing through. Gary Campbell, who has managed the station for 14 years, remembers when the business was located at the intersection of Glen Innes and Tingha Roads, before the current roundabout was built.
Now, the station is situated just a few hundred meters away, operating under the Liberty brand. One of the traditions that has been preserved since the station’s early days is its full driveway service. This means that staff take care of all customer needs, from loading purchases like feed into vehicles to pumping petrol and diesel. They also go the extra mile by cleaning windshields and checking tire pressure. During the busy bug season, windshield cleaning becomes especially appreciated.
When Gary joined the team, the station expanded its offerings significantly. Beyond just fuel, they began selling a variety of produce, including items like silage, dog food, and chook food. What started as a modest addition quickly became a major part of the business, with several shipping containers now dedicated to housing these goods. This move was driven by the desire to stand out in the Inverell community, offering more than just basic service station fare.
The decision to expand the product range proved highly successful. Initially, a single box trailer was stocked with goods, and it sold out within two days. The offering continued to grow, and the station now provides a broad selection of items, even taking custom orders for specific supplements. Customers have responded positively, appreciating the convenience of purchasing supplies outside normal trading hours, as the station is open seven days a week. In addition, the prices for these goods are often lower than those found at rural stores, making the station a more affordable and accessible option for many.
In addition to its wide range of products, the Liberty Service Station has become a social hub for the Inverell community. It’s not just a place to refuel but also a spot where locals can drop off packages for friends and enjoy a chat. The station opens early, with regular customers often arriving at 4:30 a.m. for coffee and conversation. This personal connection has become a key part of the station’s identity, offering a friendly, welcoming environment for all who visit.
As a community-oriented business, the Liberty station is also an active supporter of local events. It frequently sponsors activities such as horse shows, junior soccer tournaments, and, most recently, helped a young girl travel to Sydney for an acrobatics competition by ensuring her family had a full tank for the journey. Supporting the community is a priority for the station, as they believe in giving back to those who support them.
This dedication to service and community has not gone unnoticed. The station was recently awarded the title of Best Service Station in the New England region by readers of the New England Times.
Gary manages the station with the help of ten staff members, including his daughter, Mel, who plays a crucial role in running the business. Mel handles much of the day-to-day operations with great attention to detail, ensuring everything runs smoothly. Gary’s grandchildren, though still young, often visit the station after school and enjoy spending time with their granddad, though for now, their main interest lies in the lollies.
The Liberty Service Station, under Gary’s leadership, continues to thrive, offering a unique blend of essential services, community engagement, and an ever-expanding range of goods. It remains an integral part of life in Inverell and is set to continue serving the community for years to come.
