6 Critical Petrol Station Risks and How to Manage Them

As a petrol station owner, you’re aware that many types of accidents are possible on the forecourt. We put together 6 of the major safety areas to keep in mind to keep your employees, your customers, and yourself safe.

1. Vehicle Traffic

Your petrol station is a high-traffic area, and major problems can crop up if you don’t have an effective system to organise it. It’s necessary to have clear signage in place that will guide drivers on traffic flow. Make sure employees, when moving around outside and near the pumps, are wearing brightly-coloured and/or reflective vests as well.

2. Slips and Falls

Potholes, broken pavement, and uneven concrete are all fall risks on the outside of your petrol station. Ensure to maintain the outdoor area not only to make sure it looks good but to preserve the safety of your staff and customers.

As for the interior of your petrol station, always post appropriate signage when the floor is wet – for example, if someone has just finished mopping, never forget to put up a sign that says ‘Wet Floor.’

3. Stress and Harassment

No one wants stress or harassment at their place of work, as it shifts the mood and atmosphere for workers and customers alike. Take complaints of harassment and stress seriously and make sure that employees are aware of proper behavioural conduct.

4. Flammable Materials

Staff and customers should know that fuel is flammable, but by offering proper training on your wet stock inventory, you can minimise the risk of disaster. Identify hazards and eliminate any sources of ignition at or around your petrol station, and always make sure that fuel is stored safely.

5. Other Dangerous Chemicals

Besides fuel, your petrol station comes complete with other hazardous chemicals, like those used to clean. Teach your staff the proper manner in which to handle these chemicals – check out our ServoSkills program for all that your employees need to know.

6. Crime and Violence

To minimise the chance of robbery and other such crimes, make sure your petrol station is equipped with security cameras and adequate lighting. Make sure all of your workers know what to do in the event of an emergency, too.

Staying Safe at Work

Petrol stations deal with unique products, which means they have unique safety hazards to consider. Keep these tips in mind to ensure that your business remains as safe as possible, and check out our ServoSkills program for training information.
